NEFYN G.C. REMEMBERS PETER ALLISS

The words of Peter Alliss, who sadly passed away in December 2020, remembered by many as the much-loved, ‘Voice of Golf’, recalling his 50-year link with Nefyn Golf Club. In an interview for the American golf magazine, Link, he was asked for his top 10 favourite golf courses around the world and there sandwiched between Sunningdale at number four and the Old Course at St Andrews at six, was Nefyn Golf Club. “It’s the good memories, the good company, the pleasant weather, the great surroundings that make for a special day.”
Peter Alliss, in his introductory commentary for the club’s website, recalls playing an England versus Wales exhibition match in July 1970 at Nefyn, accompanied by three great friends of his, Bernard Hunt, Dai Rees and Dave Thomas.

Peter, in his later discussions with the club about undertaking the commentary, confessed to not remembering too much about the match itself, but recalled a, “magical experience and a great welcome.” Senior members of the club, whether caddies or just spectators on that day, still hold fond memories of that Anglo – Welsh encounter between four great golfers of that era.
Peter readily agreed to undertake the task of doing the voice-over for the introduction to Nefyn’s website in 2015, along with a hole-by-hole description, delivering it in that relaxed and informal style for which he’d become famous over the years. Even having to return to the recording studio a couple of times to get the Welsh pronunciation of Porthdinllaen correct was handled with the usual Alliss professionalism and good humour!
“I urge you to go, there’s everything there for you to enjoy,’ was Peter’s concluding recommendation, ‘a warm welcome, great course, good food and drink and lots of great memories to take home.”
Nefyn Golf Club is very proud and honoured to have been associated with and remembered by a man who, truly was, one of Britain’s greatest ambassadors for the game of golf.
